Composed by The First Panchen Lama (1567-1662) and translated by Geshe Michael Roach.
This selection of exquisite poetry by Lobsang Chukyi Gyeltsen, come his biography as it appears in the classic work on the lives of the masters of the Lam Rim lineage, written by Yongdzin Yeshe Gyeltsen, tutor to His Holiness the Eighth Dalai Lama. Much of the poetry here was never included in the First Panchen Lama’s traditional collected works, but has rather been taken from a secret tradition of chanting his poems at the tantric college located in his monastery Tashi Lhunpo. They were written throughout his long life, starting from the age of 14, and they convey his inner progress in developing the steps of the path to Enlightenment. They also illustrate the manner in which he conducted his life and practice in the external world. In that sense, these poems are a real example for us to follow, and this selection was chosen to relate to particular steps of the path that we ourselves are working on.

Every system of personal development in the world recommends giving as an important strategy for happiness, both personal and global.
Over two thousand years ago, the Buddha challenged his disciples with the question: “Is there any difference, though, between giving and sharing?” That is the question answered by this ancient teaching, which we have entitled The Art of Sharing.
“All the Kinds of Karma.” A young man named Shuka runs into the Buddha in a garden near the ancient Indian city of Shravasti, and the Buddha agrees to share with him how to identify all the seeds we need to plant—in the months and years to come—a wonderful life.
Competition is built into the American way of life. But is it the best way to live? When we perceive the world as a football game—as a competition to beat others so we can be the best and biggest—is there a human cost that all of us pay? If the two largest superpowers in the world have a trade war, does anybody truly win?
